Equipment

Complete this walkaround before operating any piece of heavy equipment at the start of each shift. It catches leaks, damage, and failed safety devices before they cause downtime or an incident, and it documents the operator's daily inspection.

Fluids and leaks

• Check engine oil level and top off if low
• Check coolant level at the reservoir, never on a hot pressurized system
• Check hydraulic fluid level and inspect for leaks at hoses and cylinders
• Check fuel level and inspect the fuel system for leaks
• Look under the machine for fresh fluid spots or drips
• Check DEF level where equipped

Tires, tracks, and undercarriage

• Inspect tires for correct pressure, cuts, and exposed cords
• Check wheel lugs for tightness and missing nuts
• Inspect tracks for tension, damaged pads, and worn or missing hardware
• Check rollers, idlers, and sprockets for wear and debris buildup
• Clear mud, rock, and debris packed in the undercarriage

Exterior and attachments

• Inspect the boom, bucket, blade, or forks for cracks, bends, and excessive wear
• Check pins, bushings, and attachment couplers for wear and security
• Verify grease points are serviced per the daily lubrication schedule
• Inspect steps, handholds, and walkways for damage and slippery buildup
• Check that guards, covers, and access panels are in place and secured

Safety devices

• Test the backup alarm and confirm it sounds in reverse
• Test the horn and any travel alarms
• Check all work lights, headlights, and beacons
• Verify mirrors and backup camera are clean, intact, and adjusted
• Confirm the fire extinguisher is charged and mounted in the cab
• Verify ROPS or FOPS structure is undamaged and the seat belt latches properly

Cab and controls

• Clean windows and check wipers and washers
• Adjust the seat and confirm the operator presence system works
• Check gauges and warning lights for normal readings at startup
• Test service and parking brakes before traveling
• Cycle steering and hydraulic controls through full range and check for abnormal response
• Listen for unusual noises during startup and idle
• Record the hour meter reading and report any defects before operating
