Inspections

Inspect every ladder before first use on each shift and after any drop or impact. This checklist covers the ladder itself, its setup, and safe use practices, and applies to portable step and extension ladders.

Condition

• Inspect side rails for cracks, bends, splits, or corrosion
• Check rungs and steps for damage, looseness, and slippery coatings
• Verify rung locks, spreaders, and hinges work freely and lock securely
• Confirm feet and slip-resistant pads are present and in good condition
• Check ropes and pulleys on extension ladders for fraying and smooth operation
• Verify hardware, rivets, and bolts are tight with none missing
• Tag and remove any damaged ladder from service immediately

Labels and ratings

• Confirm the duty rating label is legible and adequate for the worker plus tools
• Verify warning and instruction labels are present and readable
• Confirm fiberglass ladders are used near any electrical work, never metal

Setup

• Place the ladder on firm, level ground with both feet in full contact
• Set extension ladders at a 4 to 1 angle, one foot out for every four feet up
• Extend the ladder at least 3 feet above the landing surface when used for access
• Secure the top or bottom of the ladder against movement where possible
• Fully open stepladders and lock the spreaders before climbing
• Keep the ladder clear of doorways and traffic, or barricade the area
• Check overhead for power lines before raising or moving any ladder

Use

• Face the ladder and maintain three points of contact while climbing
• Keep your belt buckle between the side rails and do not overreach
• Carry tools on a belt or raise them with a line, not in your hands while climbing
• Do not stand on the top cap or top step of a stepladder
• Allow only one person on the ladder at a time
• Do not move or shift a ladder while anyone is on it
