Onboarding

Use this checklist to orient every new worker before their first shift on site. It ensures each person hears the same site rules, knows what to do in an emergency, and has the equipment and information required to work safely from day one.

  • Walk the site layout, including work zones, break areas, and restrooms
  • Explain restricted areas and the authorization needed to enter them

  • Review the disciplinary policy for safety violations

Emergency procedures

  • Walk the evacuation routes and identify the assembly point
  • Explain the alarm or signal used for evacuation and severe weather

  • Confirm the worker has appropriate work boots and gloves for their tasks
  • Demonstrate correct fit and adjustment for issued PPE
  • Explain when hearing, respiratory, or fall protection is required and how to obtain it
  • Explain how to report damaged PPE and get replacements

Hazard communication

  • Explain the hazard communication program and where the written plan is kept
  • Show where safety data sheets are located and how to look one up
  • Review container labeling and the meaning of pictograms on site chemicals
  • Identify the specific hazardous materials the worker may encounter
  • Review site-specific hazards such as overhead work, traffic, or excavations

Reporting and communication

  • Explain how to report injuries, near misses, and unsafe conditions immediately
  • Confirm the worker knows their direct supervisor and how to reach them
  • Explain stop-work authority and that it applies to every worker on site
  • Review the schedule and location of daily briefings and toolbox talks

Verification

  • Confirm required training certifications, such as OSHA 10, are on file
