Inspections

A competent person must inspect each scaffold before every work shift and after any event that could affect its integrity, such as high winds or an impact. Use this checklist to document that inspection and tag the scaffold before crews climb it.

Tags and documentation

• Confirm the scaffold was erected under the supervision of a competent person
• Verify the scaffold tag is present, current, and matches the scaffold status
• Confirm the scaffold has not been altered since the last inspection
• Verify the rated load capacity is posted or known and adequate for the planned work

Foundation and support

• Check that the scaffold bears on firm, level ground or adequate structural support
• Verify base plates and mud sills are in full contact under every leg
• Confirm screw jacks are not over-extended and are snug to the frame
• Check that the scaffold has not settled, shifted, or been undermined
• Verify casters on rolling scaffolds are locked before use

Frames, bracing, and ties

• Inspect frames, posts, and runners for bends, cracks, rust, or damage
• Confirm cross braces are installed and pinned on all frames
• Verify couplers and connections are tight and components are from the same system
• Confirm ties, guys, or braces are installed at required intervals for the height
• Check that the scaffold is plumb, level, and square

Platforms and planking

• Verify platforms are fully planked or decked with no gaps greater than 1 inch
• Inspect planks for cracks, splits, notches, or excessive deflection
• Confirm planks extend at least 6 inches past supports and are cleated or secured
• Check that platforms are clear of ice, mud, grease, and excess debris
• Verify material on the platform does not exceed the rated capacity

Access and fall protection

• Confirm a ladder, stair tower, or built-in access is provided, with no climbing of braces
• Verify guardrails, midrails, and toeboards are complete on platforms 10 feet or higher
• Confirm workers on scaffolds without complete guardrails are tied off appropriately
• Check that falling object protection is in place where workers pass below

Clearances and surroundings

• Verify required clearance from energized power lines is maintained
• Confirm the area below is barricaded or controlled where overhead work occurs
• Check weather conditions and stop scaffold work in high winds or storms
• Update the scaffold tag and record the inspection before releasing the scaffold for use
