Silica Dust Awareness
Why concrete and masonry dust destroys lungs, wet methods and vacuum dust collection, respirators, and why dry sweeping silica is never acceptable.

The dust you make cutting block, grinding concrete, or drilling into masonry contains crystalline silica, and those particles are small enough to lodge deep in your lungs and stay there. Silica causes silicosis, an incurable lung disease, along with lung cancer and kidney disease, and the damage builds silently over years. You will not feel it on the day you breathe it, which is exactly why the controls are not optional.

- Dry cutting, grinding, or drilling concrete, brick, block, mortar, tile, or stone
- Dry sweeping or blowing off dusty surfaces with compressed air
- Dust drifting onto nearby workers who are not even part of the task
- Abrasive blasting and demolition of concrete and masonry
- Dusty clothing carrying silica into break areas, trucks, and home to your family
- Skipping the water or vacuum attachment because the cut is quick
Safe practices
- Use wet methods first. Water at the blade or bit knocks dust down at the source.
- When wet methods are not possible, use tools with shrouds connected to a HEPA vacuum dust collection system.
- Follow your employer's silica plan, which for most common tools follows the control methods in OSHA's silica standard.
- Wear the respirator the task requires, fit tested, and be clean shaven where the mask seals. A paper dust mask from the gas station is not a respirator.
- Work upwind of the dust when you can, and keep workers who are not needed out of the dust zone.
- Never dry sweep or blow silica dust with compressed air. Clean up with a HEPA vacuum or wet methods.
- Keep the water flowing and the vacuum working. An empty tank or a clogged filter means you are effectively cutting dry.
- Change out of heavily dusted clothing and wash your hands and face before eating, drinking, or smoking.
- Speak up when controls are missing or broken instead of pushing through the cut.

If something goes wrong
- If the water feed or vacuum fails mid-task, stop cutting and fix the control before finishing the work.
- If someone has been working in visible silica dust without controls, report the exposure to the foreman the same day so it can be documented and corrected.
- Anyone with a lasting cough, shortness of breath, or chest tightness after dusty work should be evaluated by a doctor and say what they were exposed to.
